M.A. 政策及程序
M.A. degree requires 30 credits (that is, 10 courses at three credits each). 指定一门课程 理论 from our regular course offerings is required, as is one course designated 方法. We offer a wide variety of courses (ordinarily about 10 per semester). Classes are small and allow an intensive engagement with peers and faculty. In addition, 学生 may devote up to six credits to independent 阅读和电子游戏正规平台 tutorials under the supervision of department faculty. These tutorials are initiated by one or more 学生 in consultation with a professor and focus on a topic of mutual interest. The syllabus and assignments are developed collaboratively, and result in one or more longer papers. R&Rs are most productive when they delve deeply into a topic previously explored in a regularly offered course, or when the student and professor share a research interest that is not currently offered in the regular curriculum.
综合考试, 每年秋天提供, gives 学生 the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge about literary periodization and to use close-reading skills. 时长3小时, it asks 学生 to complete three of five questions—each one addressing a different major literary period. 对于每个问题, 学生 are provided with a passage from a work of literature; the name of the work’s author; the date of the work’s publication; and some prompts about the work and a keyword relevant to it, 如 歌词 or 先验论. Students are asked to address one or more of these prompts through a close reading of the passage. The objective is to demonstrate mastery of a wide range of skills in answering each question.
综合考试 must be taken by the fall of the second year.
Students are examined on a basic reading knowledge of one foreign language. The language exam consists of a two-hour translation of a passage of academic writing with the aid of a dictionary. It is offered in the fall semester at the same time as the comprehensive examination, and may be taken during the first or the second year. A wide range of languages can be accommodated.
The language exam may be waived if:
- the candidate supplies an undergraduate transcript showing two courses beyond beginning level in a foreign language with grades of B or above (taken within three years of entering the M.A. 程序).
- the candidate earns a grade of "B" or above in a 12-week intensive language course administered by the 电子游戏正规平台生 School of Arts and Sciences at 电子游戏软件, 或者是等价的. These summer intensive classes typically include French, 德国, and Latin (although other languages may be offered), and are scheduled by the individual departments. Please check EagleApps for course registration information, or contact the foreign language department directly. Students taking the class to satisfy the language requirement may do so for 1 credit.
- the candidate has native-level proficiency and completed a university degree using that language.
The concentration in 爱尔兰文学与文化 has its own 的指导方针.
Students are assigned an advisor in their area of interest upon admission to the program, and the program director advises all M.A. 学生. The most important mentoring relationships develop organically as 学生 take classes and get to know their professors.
The 英语 department is home to the 毕业的讨论会，关节M.A.-Ph.D. initiative that sponsors lectures and gatherings throughout the academic year. 近年来, the Colloquium has taken the form of thematic evenings, each with a keynote lecture by one faculty member followed by papers delivered and responded to by our graduate 学生.
